Dentures Q & A

Are there different kinds of dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth. Full dentures are full sets of false teeth, while a partial denture is used to fill in gaps left by a missing tooth or teeth. Dentures sit on your gums and they are not permanently attached to your jaw.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Dentures are the most cost effective way to replace missing teeth and they provide a number of additional benefits including:

  • Creating a natural and attractive smile
  • Making it easier for you to eat and maintain a healthy diet
  • Supporting the muscles in your lips and face: Preventing them from sinking in around your mouth
  • Protecting remaining teeth from excess wear
  • Keeping any natural teeth from shifting

How are dentures fitted?

If dentures are the best way for you to replace missing teeth, Dr. Burquez will perform a comprehensive exam taking X-rays and molds of your gums and any remaining teeth. These images and molds will be used to create dentures customized to fit your mouth perfectly.

When your dentures are ready you will have an appointment where Dr. Burquez will check the fit of the dentures and give you instructions on how to get used to wearing them as well as information on how to take care of your dentures.

How do I take care of dentures?

You will need to brush your dentures with a gentle, non-abrasive brush and soak them overnight in a cleaning solution. You will also need to gently brush your gums and any remaining teeth and attend regular dental checkups so Dr. Burquez can monitor your dental health.

Does it take a long time to get used to dentures?

The more you wear your dentures the more quickly you will get used to them. It may help to read out loud to practice talking while your dentures are in. Dr. Burquez will give you advice on how to adapt to wearing your new dentures. Millions of people have gotten used to dentures and you can too!
