If you or your child need braces or other orthodontic treatment to realign your teeth and improve the appearance of your smile, Florencio Burquez DDS, provides corrective treatment with braces. Traditional metal braces are an effective method of correcting dental alignment and can be used to correct overbites, crowding, gaps, and more. Make your appointment with Dr. Burquez at his practice in Chula Vista, California today. Call his office or use his easy online scheduling tool.
Traditional metal braces have been used by dentists for over 100 years to straighten teeth and correct alignment issues. Dr. Burquez will take X-rays and 3D images of your teeth to determine how they need to move to reach their correct positions.
Traditional braces consist of brackets that are attached to your teeth, wires that are threaded through the brackets, and bands that provide additional support and pressure. The wires and bands put constant pressure on your teeth to guide them into the corrected position. Dr. Burquez will tighten and adjust the wires and bands periodically throughout treatment to help guide your teeth.
Once your treatment is complete, you may need to wear a retainer to help keep your teeth in their new corrected position. Each patient is different but in most cases, you will need to wear a retainer all the time for a few months after your braces come off, eventually transitioning to only wearing it overnight while you sleep.
Dr. Burquez will bond the brackets to your teeth, then thread the wires through the brackets and secure them with bands.
You will have appointments every four to six weeks for wires to be tightened and bands replaced throughout the duration of your braces treatment. This also gives Dr. Burquez an opportunity to monitor your progress and to make sure that your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout the treatment.
The length of time you need to wear your braces will depend on the severity of your alignment issues. Most patients wear their braces for between 18 months and 3 years.
You will need to take extra care while brushing and flossing your teeth while the braces are in place. Dr. Burquez will give you instructions and advice on how to take care of your teeth at home.
You will also need to avoid eating hard, crunchy foods which could damage the braces. It is also advised to give up chewing gum and hard candies while your braces are in place.
